July 4, 2014 - Blue-and-gold Macaw or Blue-and-yellow Macaw (Ara ararauna)
Requested by: thesassybirder
These large parrots are found in Venezuela, Peru, Brazil, Bolivia, and Paraguay. They can also be found in Panama, and previously in Trinidad, where efforts have been made to reintroduce them. They eat nuts, seeds, fruit, and occasionally clay. Females lay two or three eggs in nests built in dead palms. They incubate the eggs while the males bring them food. Blue-and-gold Macaws are popular as pets, but need a large amount of space and attention.
